June 2018: Creative Digital Photography for Beginners

Weekend course. Each day from 10am-3pm. Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of June, 2018 at Uillinn, West Cork Arts Centre

Learn how to use your digital SLR camera to make beautiful and creative photographs with experienced teacher, visual artist and photographer Mick Holly.

In this course the student will learn how to use their digital SLR Camera for creative photography. Camera and photography basics such as shooting in Manual mode, creative use of shutter and aperture, understanding light, and digital organisation and post production will be covered. Students will be provided with notes for each class. A digital mirrorless or SLR Camera is required. 50% of the course will be spent in class and 50% in practice.

Day One: – Digital SLR Camera basics. – Understanding your camera’s functions. – Exposure modes. – Creative use of shutter speed and aperture. – Understanding light, depth of field and basic portrait photography. – Field Trip for practice

Day Two: Understanding the lens. – Nighttime, flash and low-light photography. – Composing a photograph and creative use of colour. – Understanding the digital image. – Introduction to software for organising and adjusting your photographs. – Field Trip for practice.

Expect creativity, fun and one-on-one tuition.

June 2018: Advanced Creative Digital Photography Weekend Workshop

Weekend Course. Each day from 10am-3pm. Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of June, 2018 at Uillinn, West Cork Arts Centre

 In this course, students who already have an understanding of Digital SLR and Mirrorless photography will be given the opportunity to develop their camera skills and to apply them in a creative setting. Students will work on a creative photo-series during the course. A Digital SLR or Mirrorless Camera and tripod is required for this course.

Day 1: – Becoming more confident with your digital camera: advanced camera functions. – Using available natural and artificial in creative portrait photography. – Advanced exposure techniques. -Techniques for nature and landscape photography – ‘Ways of Seeing’ Composition, form, colour and how to ‘read’ an image. – Preparing your photograph for printing using Adobe Photoshop.

Day 2: – Photography trip to Lissard Estate and Gardens: https://www.lissardestate.com/

July 2018: 2-Week Digital Storytelling Workshop

 Each Saturday from 10am-3pm. Saturday 7th and ~Saturday 14th of July, 2018 at Uillinn, West Cork Arts Centre

Digital Storytelling is a way of creating mini-documentaries with still pictures and recorded sound for viewing online through social media or video streaming services. The tools used are mobile phones and consumer computers, and these tools enable the participants to create multi- dimensional stories that are conveyed using a combination of text, photographs, ambient sound, voice and music.

During the course each participant will produce a short (under seven minutes) digital story or mini-documentary. The subject of the stories to be made is up to the participants, and can be anything from a portrait of a family member to an illustrated documentary.

Instruction will be given on all aspects of the production of a digital story, from conception, project management, planning, basic photography and sound recording, interviewing skills, sound and photo editing, video editing and getting your story online.

A smartphone and laptop are required at minimum. Students with more advanced cameras welcome.

Area’s Covered:

Week One: Basic Digital Photography. -Composition for digital storytelling. Audio field recording basics. Interviewing techniques. Structuring a documentary.

Week Two: – Selecting and editing your photographs. -Basic sound editing. – Making an audio slideshow. – Uploading and sharing your digital story.

September 2018: Creative Digital Photography for Beginners, 6- Week Course

6-week course. Evenings from 7-9pm.

Sep 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, Oct 2nd and 9th 2018 at Uillinn, West Cork Arts Centre

Camera and photography basics such as shooting in Manual mode, creative use of shutter and aperture, understanding light, and digital organisation and post production will be covered. The student will work on a small creative project during the course which will be ultimately compiled into a slideshow. Students will be provided with notes for each class. A digital mirrorless or SLR Camera is required.

Week 1: Digital SLR Camera basics, understanding your camera’s functions, exposure modes, creative use of shutter speed and aperture

Week 2: Understanding light, depth of field and basic portrait photography

Week 3: Understanding the lens, nighttime, flash and low-light photography,

Week 4: Composing a photograph and creative use of colour. Understanding the digital image.

Week 5: Field Trip

Week 6: Downloading, cataloging and digitally adjusting your images, creating a slideshow of your images for web use.

Expect creativity, fun and one-on-one tuition.
